Sitting on my cabin’s porch, I gaze at my phone with what has to be the face of a fool in love. Savannah and I have spent the day chatting. I can’t get my mind out of her. And with reason.

Yesterday, I took her out for a date. I tried to pretend I just wanted to see her again, with no second intentions. But what a lousy liar I am. When it comes to her, at least.

She’s the most interesting part of my life. Everything she tells me is fascinating. I love the sound of her voice and the way she smells.

Sex with her is still the best thing I could ever experience.

There’s no way I can keep my distance. Not when my bear’s crying out so loud inside me. Ordering me to go after her. Mark her as I should have done all those years ago.

My beautiful mate. And how stunning she has become with the years that passed between us. I can’t even imagine how she’ll look in ten years.

“Night, Rhys,” Major calls before he shuts himself inside his cabin. We had been sitting on our porches, drinking beer. First Callum and his mate went inside. Then we ordered Slate to go because the two are like horny teenagers and no one wants to watch that.

Now that’s only me left. But not for long. Soon enough, she’ll be here with me. My hand on her hair, her lips on mine.

I have never felt such happiness in my life. The feeling fills me to the brim, to the point my throat closes in on itself. I laugh under my breath as I chat with Savannah. We talk about movies she likes until the moon is high in the sky.

Then she bids me goodnight. Putting my hands behind me, I lean back, desiring the woods. The call is strong tonight. I need not do anything, since the alpha markings are fresh, and we’ve hunted recently. But something is urging me to go between the trees, and I’m not one to neglect my instincts.

Ambling to the back of the cabin, I strip and prompt my clothes to one side. Then I let the shift take me.

My bear comes out with a doubt in his head. Putting our nose down, we sniff.

There’s something off.

My body tenses. The instincts that someone has just crossed my territory flares. And not someone like Savannah. Accidentally. Someone… As in an invader.

Looking behind me, I judge going for the others. But each of them has a mate now. Someone who would miss them if they were hurt.

Yes, I’ve got Savannah. But it’s different since we’re not mated yet. I love her more than anything in my life, but if I die, the hurt in her heart wouldn’t be the same as if we were mated. The mating bond, once broken by death, is excruciating. Or so I’ve heard.

I can’t risk my clan now. That’s why they have an alpha.

Darting into the woods as silently as I can, I distance myself from the clearing.
