I chose not to take Amy to the hospital since she didn’t show any signs of an overdose, other than possible hallucinations and dilated pupils. I also knew that if a doctor diagnosed her with an overdose, it could hurt her standing at the college. I decided I would only take her to the emergency room if she got worse, which she didn’t. I kept checking her body temperature, skin color, and heart rate, and I wouldn’t let her sleep, not until she was somewhat coherent. By that point, Luke had shown up. I wanted to call his cell phone earlier that evening, but I didn’t know his number, and Amy’s drug-induced brain couldn’t seem to come up with the password to her cell, so I gave up. When his jam session ended, and he finally arrived, Luke snickered about her condition and handed Amy his coffee as if that would cure all her woes. By then, the crisis was mostly over. Amy still acted strangely but not quite as animated, and she could form complete sentences instead of Star Wars babbling.

“She won’t come down from her trip for a few more hours,” Luke informed me, his voice even, indicating no sign of alarm.

The only time Luke’s brow had tugged downward was when I told him that Amy had purchased the laced weed from Axl.

“She needs to steer clear of him. He’s a strange dude,” he said. “I was out of weed this afternoon, and I think she wanted some. But I just got a new stash, so I’ll hook her up from now on.”

From her bed, Amy grew sleepy. “Let’s smoke some,” she said in a faint voice.

I pointed at Luke. “Don’t you dare!”

He assured me he wouldn’t.

When I left, Amy was sprawled out over her comforter while Luke was lying next to her, staring at his phone.

I was dog tired. So tired in fact, that on my drive to Scott’s apartment, I called Abigail to keep me awake, even though the drive wasn’t that far. I’d been busy lately and had missed hearing her voice. Her groggy hello told me I had probably woken her up, and then I looked at the time on my dashboard, which flashed 11:30 p.m. Dummy.

“I’m so sorry. I’ll call you tomorrow,” I said.

“No, that’s okay. How’s it going? Where are you? Why are you out this late?”

I guessed she had picked up on the sound of my left turn signal and the noise of the car. “Oh, I went to a movie with Amy. She decided to stay at Luke’s place. He’s her boyfriend. I just dropped her off.” Thank God she couldn’t see my bad poker face.

“Oh. How’s Amy doing?”

“She’s good,” I said. Other than her near drug overdose, that is.

“What movie did you two see?”

Crap. I thought of a recent title and ran with it, which seemed to satisfy Abigail’s curiosity.

“How are your classes going? Do you like your teachers?”

What was it about moms? They had more questions than anyone I’d ever met.
