There you have it, I have covered all those spousal categories I shared in the opening of the chapter. Simply stated, if both spouses are 62 years old or older, they are borrowers. And for couples who can afford to wait until both of them are 62, it may be their best option.

For couples where one of them is not yet 62, including common law marriage states like Arizona where I live, the vast majority of non-borrowing spouses are in the category of an eligible non-borrowing spouse. If I haven’t covered you yet, you would be an ineligible non-borrowing spouse. Basically, of all the categories I previously listed, it comes down to three categories into which a spouse can fall.
