CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

“A wheelie bin?” DS Skinner said.

“It’s the first one you can see from the road,” O’Reilly told him. “Finney has left his calling card on the lid of a wheelie bin.”

O’Reilly had debated whether to get hold of DCI Urban and tell him what he’d found but, in the end, he’d decided to phone the switchboard at the station and ask to be put through to someone in his own team. Urban would no doubt want to know what he was doing snooping around at the scene of a crime he was a suspect in.

“Go and take a look,” O’Reilly continued. “Get hold of Jim Peters and get over there.”

“This isn’t our party anymore, sir,” DS Skinner reminded him.

“I’m well aware of that. I’m well aware the party has been gate-crashed by a bunch of idiots, but you need to check that bin.”

“What about Urban?” Skinner asked. “What do we tell him?”

“I couldn’t give a rat’s arse what you tell him, Will. Tell him you found it by chance. Tell him the owner of the bin was a Paddy Finney fan and recognised the calling card. This is the work of Finney and that chalk drawing proves it.”

O’Reilly realised he was shaking when he’d ended the call. He took a few deep breaths and sat down on a nearby bench. He felt like he was the only one on the island who actually knew what was going on. Patrick Finney was in Guernsey and he was hell-bent on destroying O’Reilly’s life and nobody seemed to believe him. Nobody could see what was happening and O’Reilly knew he was running out of both time and options.

Patrick Finney had been caught before but at what cost? O’Reilly had been on the brink of losing everything because of his determination to bring Finney down. His marriage had almost collapsed because of it – his wife Mary had used the word obsession on more than one occasion and he’d been lucky to come out of it with his sanity intact.

Would he be able to go through all that again, this time with nobody to help him? He didn’t think he could. He would need some help to beat Finney again, but he didn’t know how to get that help when none of his colleagues or friends knew what a monster Finney actually was nor did they understand the way his mind operated.

As O’Reilly sat and stared out to sea a thought entered his mind. It was an idea so repulsive it made him shiver. He realised there was someone who might be able to help him – someone who knew Finney inside out, but asking this man for help could have repercussions that might be considerably worse than the predicament he was currently in. He pushed the idea aside. He would try and sort this out on his own for the time being. He would reconsider his options only when he had no other choice.

The wind was showing no sign of easing off as O’Reilly walked back towards his apartment.
