The main room was filled with guests. Hogarth was still in the pillory at the edge of the group. Finchly was nowhere to be seen. Dixon spotted them at once and crossed the room. The guests all turned to watch.
âHands behind your head,â Brisban muttered before leaving to join the crowd.
Sam obeyed, positioning his hands so Dixon and the others had a clear view of him.
Dixon walked slowly around him. He ran a finger over the welts left by the whip, but he didnât linger over the ones by the scar any more than the others. Then he tipped Samâs chin up so he could look at his face. Dixon laughed. âGot it at both ends, eh? Which took which? I say Romley up the arse, right?â So that explained Brisbanâs actions. He was making sure no one knew Romley had fallen asleep. Was that for Romleyâs sake or his own? Dixon didnât wait for an answer. âAll right, time for lunch, everyone. Weâll move the stocks in there.â
Brisban looked Sam directly in the eye and yawned. Sam tried to figure out what that meant. Had he found him boring? Wanted him to know this was nothing? Wanted him to yawn? As soon as he thought that, his mouth opened involuntarily.
Dixon rolled his eyes. âAnother one tired out? Seems there was some vigorous fucking in there.â
âI shafted him well,â Romley said blearily.
âAll right,â Dixon said. âWe need him up for tonight. Chain him back in the playroom and let him rest. Hogart will entertain at lunch.â
Murdoc grabbed Sam by the shoulder and led him to the playroom. Finchly was there, stretched out on a couch, his hands chained to the arm, his bottom showing clear signs of paddling. He seemed genuinely asleep. Murdoc pushed Sam to another couch. âLie down.â
It didnât make sense to disobey, so Sam got as comfortable as he could and waited while Murdoc chained his hands. âIâll be back for you when weâre ready.â
When Sam heard the door close, he tried the chains, but they were tight enough that he couldnât get free. He could sit up and probably roll to the floor, but then he wouldnât be able to get back up on the couch. He didnât see any way to escape, so he closed his eyes and tried to rest. Heâd have a better chance to get away tonight, and then he could explore part of the house at least with a clear head.
