I hope Mom is happy that I went to one of these again. Martha sat with a headache, waiting in the back of her momâs buggy after a ladyâs work frolic the next day. She was tired and couldnât wait to get home. Martha, Mom, Christine, Jeanna, and some other Amish women had helped clean a house for a widow friend of one of the women.
Martha would have preferred to be working at the bed-and-breakfast, but they had no guests, which meant they didnât have much to do. So Mom had insisted they help out. Martha didnât feel that she had much to contribute in the way of socializing and would have liked to skip out, but Lori wasnât available for a visit.
Finally Marthaâs mom and sisters came out and headed to their buggy. Iâm glad weâre done, because my head is hurting, and I canât wait to go lie down. Hopefully this will be gone by tomorrow when my double date with Glen, Lori, and Ronald is scheduled to start.
The movement of her sister stepping on the foot peg brought Martha out of her thoughts.
âIâm beat.â Christine climbed in and sat next to Martha.
Mom sat in the driverâs seat. âIâm sorry your head hurts, Martha. I should have something at home for you to take for it.â
âThat would be nice.â
âI think we all did a good job today for the nice widow lady.â
âI agree.â Jeanna untied Dolly and stepped up into the rig next to Mom. âWhat are we having for supper?â
âI set out a frozen chicken-and-rice casserole. Your father agreed to put it in the oven at the appropriate time. Weâve got plenty of macaroni salad from yesterday too, and I can heat up a jar of green beans to have with our meal.â
âI canât wait, and the mention of food isnât helping.â Jeanna opened her bag and dug through it.
âWhat are you looking for Jeanna?â Christineâs brows knitted together.
âIâm hoping thereâs something in here I can eat.â
âHow can you be that desperate? We did have lunch, you know.â Martha massaged her temples.
âAha, I found some gum. Does anyone else want a piece?â
Mom smiled as she held the reins. âSure, Iâll take one.â
âWhy not? Please pass it back here.â Christine took one and offered it to Martha.
Martha shook her head. Her headache was making her nauseous. She tried listening to her mother and sisters chat, but her mind wandered. I canât wait for this pain to go away. Also, I canât wait until I get to go out tomorrow with Glen, Lori, and Ronald. I like to be outdoors, and going hiking will be fun. Weâll go out for burgers later on. Itâll be nice to hang out with my friends.
