Chapter Sixteen

Rachel sat down at her desk that faced out overlooking the beach. From the vantage point of the second floor, she could see pretty far. It was a lovely clear day and the beach invited her, but she knew it was cold and blustery despite the appearances otherwise.

And she had things to do.

Freelance work. Was she ready to dip her toes back into accounting? It hadn’t even been two months since she had been shattered by the double devastation of her husband’s death and then finding out all the secrets he had kept from her.

The financial devastation hadn’t been nearly as hard to take as finding out he wasn’t the man she had thought him to be. Even though they hadn’t felt as warm and fuzzy toward each other as they had when they were young, Rachel had thought they were still friends. She had told Todd everything. He knew all about her attempts at writing, even though he had belittled them. He knew she didn’t have any friends. He knew she missed her aunt. He knew she loved her job. He knew all her coworkers. Everything. And she had thought she knew everything about him. Of course, she wasn’t completely stupid. It had been obvious he didn’t share as many details with her as she did with him, but she had always chalked that up to him being a guy and not feeling the need to share as much as a woman needed to. But no. It had turned out that he had too many secrets that he didn’t want her to find out about.

Maybe going back into accounting wasn’t the best idea after all. Rachel sighed. What else could she do, though? She didn’t really have any other skills.

Don’t sell yourself so short. Her mindset group would be appalled with how far down she had allowed herself to get today. Blowing a stray hair off her forehead, Rachel opened a search engine and started investigating. That was one aspect of forensic accounting she could still do – research and investigation. She would figure out what sort of work there might be for her.

A couple hours later she came back up for air. The room had darkened as the sun was setting, and her stomach was reminding her that she ought to eat something. But she was also reminded that having a flexible schedule would be perfect. Being able to chase down ideas whenever she felt like it would be amazing. And being able to go out for a walk or a swim whenever she felt like it and the weather permitted was a luxury she didn’t want to give up too soon.

There were a few possibilities for work she could do. But she knew her best bet for getting work she would enjoy and that would easily pay her few bills lay in the accounting sphere. If she had even just one client, she wouldn’t have to worry about money. Since her house was paid for, she only had to really pay utilities, taxes, and food.
