REPLACEMENT THOUGHTS—THE FIVE-MINUTE RULE
When you decide to become more accountable by taking responsibility for your life, you’ll become more conscious of taking some breaths before you respond to whatever is going on. This way, you can catch yourself resorting to old patterns of blame, guilt and pleasing others, and remind yourself that you want to make a conscious choice to take more responsibility for whatever is happening around you. Accountability can feel less stressful than always trying to live up to other people’s expectations and standards. Take five minutes to respond differently after you identify a thought that’s not in alignment with being accountable to yourself. Get into the habit of using the following affirmations:
I will accept that I am forever changing and creating myself and that I will never be a fixed or foregone conclusion. Allow yourself to get excited about being true to yourself, and what you want to believe or do. This allows you to have new experiences and break free of patterns you’ve been stuck in. Having new possibilities feels so much better than feeling stuck in ways that don’t serve you well.
I will use mindfulness and active awareness skills to make conscious meaning out of life’s experiences. I have control over my thoughts, feelings and actions. Consciousness is a powerful tool for making change. Keep reminding yourself to stay aware of what you think, feel and do so you can identify patterns that need to be altered.
I will take full responsibility for all the circumstances in my life by doing what I can to make them better today. There is no one to blame anymore. When you make a conscious decision to take responsibility for your life, and affirm it often, you can make your life better. Put your energy into improving what you don’t like instead of looking for someone to blame. Accept that not everything will go your way, and that’s okay. Take blame out of the picture, and don’t transfer the blame onto yourself. People sometimes do that when they realize they let people orchestrate their lives. You didn’t know better. Just do your best and allow your anxiety to ease instead of looking for someone to blame. But always remember that life is unpredictable most of the time.
I will be more aware of the choices I make today and accept that I alone am the author of my destiny. The more you pay attention to your choices, the more they will be in your consciousness. The more they’re in your consciousness, the more likely you’ll be to start evaluating your choices based on what’s best for you, not other people. Those choices can lead to a more authentic self and less anxiety.
I will remember who I am in relation to others and be an authentic, separate individual. I will differentiate myself from others and let them experience the uniqueness of who I am. Give yourself permission to be your own person instead of trying to dance to everybody else’s tunes. You can fit in with others while being true to you.
