Chapter Ten

John

I’m sick of pretending I’m terrible at golf, but I remind myself there is no reason to flex my muscles and embarrass my boss. Every bone in my body wants to show him how horrible a player he is, but like the other men in the firm—including the other partners—I hang back and pretend I’m losing to my pig of a boss by ten strokes. I fumble up a putt and pretend to get annoyed with myself, all for Stockton’s benefit. I can’t even look at him anymore. I don’t know if what he said about May was the turning point, that these feelings were a long time coming and that tipped me over the edge, or if I’m completely losing my mind.

Probably both. I can’t stop thinking about the woman. We hardly know one another, but all I want to do is sit and talk to her until I have an exhaustive bank of knowledge all about her. That’s a first in my lifetime, which must mean something. If I want to know a woman that badly, and if I’m willing to put that much time into knowing her, would I ever want anyone else?

“Laughton, you’re off your game even for playing pretend.” Matt Cosgrove is my only friend at the firm, the only guy I trust with anything. He’s faking this game more than me. The guy almost went pro, but law was what he really wanted to do, so he traded his bag for a briefcase.

“I’m thinking, that’s all.” I don’t admit I’m thinking about May, but it must be obvious.

“Getting cold feet?” he asks. “And why didn’t I know this fiancé of yours existed until the gala?”

“Just trying to keep my personal life personal, that’s all,” I say, but I doubt it’ll sway him.

“Fair enough. She seems like a sweetheart. Where did you find her, and are there more where she came from? Maybe a sister?” he teases. He might be the only other man at the firm who wouldn’t step out on his girlfriend, but unfortunately for him, Calliope is already taken.

I chuckle and test my putter again. “Actually, her sister is marrying one of my brothers. It’s how I met her.” I laugh again and add, “Well, I first met her by accidentally dumping coffee all over her, and I thought she was going to rip me apart. Then I discovered she’s my future sister-in-law’s sister, and things sort of developed from there.”

“Wow,” Matt says.

I chuckle when I think about it now. “I remember the look on her face when it happened, too. The first thought that went through my head was that this was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life, and I dumped coffee all over her. Literally, head to foot.” I motion over my body and grin. Even covered with goo, May was gorgeous. I realize maybe she’s been getting under my skin for a lot longer than I thought. I’d spent a little time with her on game nights at Edwin’s, and even then, I thought there was something special about her.
