Chapter Ten
John
Iâm sick of pretending Iâm terrible at golf, but I remind myself there is no reason to flex my muscles and embarrass my boss. Every bone in my body wants to show him how horrible a player he is, but like the other men in the firmâincluding the other partnersâI hang back and pretend Iâm losing to my pig of a boss by ten strokes. I fumble up a putt and pretend to get annoyed with myself, all for Stocktonâs benefit. I canât even look at him anymore. I donât know if what he said about May was the turning point, that these feelings were a long time coming and that tipped me over the edge, or if Iâm completely losing my mind.
Probably both. I canât stop thinking about the woman. We hardly know one another, but all I want to do is sit and talk to her until I have an exhaustive bank of knowledge all about her. Thatâs a first in my lifetime, which must mean something. If I want to know a woman that badly, and if Iâm willing to put that much time into knowing her, would I ever want anyone else?
âLaughton, youâre off your game even for playing pretend.â Matt Cosgrove is my only friend at the firm, the only guy I trust with anything. Heâs faking this game more than me. The guy almost went pro, but law was what he really wanted to do, so he traded his bag for a briefcase.
âIâm thinking, thatâs all.â I donât admit Iâm thinking about May, but it must be obvious.
âGetting cold feet?â he asks. âAnd why didnât I know this fiancé of yours existed until the gala?â
âJust trying to keep my personal life personal, thatâs all,â I say, but I doubt itâll sway him.
âFair enough. She seems like a sweetheart. Where did you find her, and are there more where she came from? Maybe a sister?â he teases. He might be the only other man at the firm who wouldnât step out on his girlfriend, but unfortunately for him, Calliope is already taken.
I chuckle and test my putter again. âActually, her sister is marrying one of my brothers. Itâs how I met her.â I laugh again and add, âWell, I first met her by accidentally dumping coffee all over her, and I thought she was going to rip me apart. Then I discovered sheâs my future sister-in-lawâs sister, and things sort of developed from there.â
âWow,â Matt says.
I chuckle when I think about it now. âI remember the look on her face when it happened, too. The first thought that went through my head was that this was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life, and I dumped coffee all over her. Literally, head to foot.â I motion over my body and grin. Even covered with goo, May was gorgeous. I realize maybe sheâs been getting under my skin for a lot longer than I thought. Iâd spent a little time with her on game nights at Edwinâs, and even then, I thought there was something special about her.
