Out of the Ordinary

Pain, Eating, and Breathing during the Three States of Embodied Self-Awareness

In this chapter, we will see examples of how some of our everyday body sensations may feel in each of the three states of ESA, along with a discussion of how we shift between those states. The felt experiences reviewed in this chapter are chosen because they are common, basic, and ordinary types of body experience: pain, eating and body shape/size/appearance, and breathing.

Our awareness of these senses, and what we do with them, is also fundamental to living in a human body. Dysregulated feelings related to pain, eating, and breathing can have serious consequences for health maintenance. Becoming aware of how to shift out of dysregulated patterns and into more modulated or restorative ways to experience these senses can lead to profound changes in our well-being and our sense of ourselves in our body.1
