(b) Step Two: Recycle That Damage, Girl!

In the video for “Video Phone,” Beyonce’s character performs for her (potential) paramour’s video phone and for our computers, smartphones, and tablets. This performance is the process through which she composes a resilient feminine self. Overcoming the male gaze, Beyonce’s character emerges as a distinctly feminine “data self.”

Originally Rob Horning’s term, the “data self” is one way that human capital is personified, one way we subjects of neoliberalism understand ourselves as “people.” Unlike the traditional Modern subject, who is a pre-existing, authentic, autonomous being that is either accurately or inaccurately represented by media, the data self is the product of algorithmic mediation. As Horning explains, the data self:

emerges through information processing (sharing, being shared, being on a social graph, having recommendations automated, being processed by algorithms, and so on). As information is processed and assimilated to the archive of self, it begins feeding into the algorithmic systems that report back to us the true nature of what we really are (Horning GAFS).
