I needed someone I trusted

Since I turned eighteen at the start of my senior year, I didn’t know what to do. I was not capable of living on my own yet. I didn’t have a job or a place to live. I reached out to the one person who made me feel worthy. The one person who cared for me as a human being. The one person I still trusted.

My most memorable and impactful experience my sophomore year of high school in Virginia was attending Young Life and meeting my counselor and mentor, Lauren. She was a college student at James Madison University (JMU) and worked with high school students in the area where I attended school.

It’s really incredible. Lauren had wanted to adopt me when I was fifteen and struggling to live with my aunt, but I wouldn’t let it happen. I just thought I was too much for anyone, so I ended up going back to Utah.

I always stayed in touch with her and kept that bond from a distance. Lauren loved me literally like nobody else. I’ve never felt loved and cared for in my entire life; by my parents or by my grandparents. It was always just dragging along, doing whatever was best for them, but Lauren was so intentional and caring about how I was feeling and what I was going through. We created this bond, and it carried out through a year of living across the country.

I felt like I could really count on this girl and she was not going anywhere.
