Chapter 25

Violet

Shivering in Al’iro’s lap, completely naked, I press my hands to his torso and bury my face against his chest. He’s so warm, he’s like a personal furnace. Normally, I’d feel vulnerable like this, but not now. Right now, I’m too cold. Besides, I trust him. He would never do anything to me against my will. I know that for a fact.

After my body stops shaking, I lift my head to his. “Are you all right?”

“Yes. Are you warm, now?”

I nod in return, frowning when his expression turns thunderous. “Do not ever do that again,” he says in a low voice, laced with quiet anger.

I jerk back. “Do what?”

“Risk yourself for me like that,” he snaps. “You could have been killed.”

“So could you,” I snap back. “What was I supposed to do? Watch you die?”

“You should have run—tried to save yourself, like I told you when we first met.”

I tip up my chin. “And I already told you I was never leaving anyone behind again. That includes you.” I press my finger to his chest for emphasis. “So, I don’t care if you’re mad. I wasn’t going to leave you to die. Not like Elain. Never again.”

His expression softens. “Forgive me. I should not have gotten angry at you. I just—” he hesitates a moment before continuing. “I understand you lost someone. I did, too,” he says, and I realize he is speaking of his sister. “I feel the same way as you. I would rather give my life than ever lose someone again. I understand. It is simply… difficult to accept, because I want to keep you safe. And if that means I may die in the attempt, I would give my life gladly, if it could save yours.”

I glance at his wings wrapped around us, noting the areas that still appear broken. I cannot imagine how much it must still pain him. “Why me, Al’iro? I’m practically a stranger to you. Why do you help me? Your wings… you’re already injured because of me. I don’t deserve your kindness or—"

“Do not say that.” His golden eyes search mine. “Do not for one moment ever believe your life is worth less than mine or anyone else’s. Do you understand?”

I lower my gaze as tears spring to my eyes, unbidden. “I just—” my breath catches. “I don’t want anyone else to die for me, Al’iro. I don’t think I can take it.”

Dark memories flood my mind, and a broken sob escapes me. “My Captain… he was with me when I woke up in a cage. When the Zovians came for us, he fought them. He tried to help me escape, and they killed him. They killed him because of me.” Tears stream down my face as anguish fills me. “Then Elain… she gave her life so I could escape, and, now, you—”

I draw in a shaking breath, unable to speak around the emotions lodged in my throat.

Al’iro cups my cheek, brushing my tears away with the soft pad of his thumb as his golden eyes meet mine.
