Hot sunlight from the twin suns filters down through the tree canopy and rouses me from my sleep. It seems like a lifetime since I last woke on my own without the yelling, hissing voices of my Albaxi captors waking me before the suns had even risen. I stir slowly until I realize all at once where I am. How long did we sleep?

I bolt up and take in my surroundings. The suns are already high in the sky, and Kaleon lays naked by my side, one large arm still flung over my middle. I try not to blush at the sight. What is left to be nervous about after our evening together?

“Wake up,” I shake Kaleon’s shoulder and he groggily rolls over, trying to pull me back to sleep with him.

“We have to get going. The suns are up already. It’s been a whole day and my crew is still out there alone.” I say, pulling myself from his grasp.

I’m not sure if it’s my words, or moving away from his that does the trick, but this does a better job at waking him.

“Did you have a rendezvous point?” he asks, finally sitting upright. For someone so strong and agile I expected him to be quicker at waking in the morning. I guess our activities took a lot out of him.

“We did, but none of us have ever left the camp before. We said we’d meet about thirty minutes east.”

“How do you measure distance in time?”

“Well, just at an average walking pace. We were plotting in jail to run for our lives, we didn’t exactly have a chance to draw up exact plans,” I explain with an exasperated sigh. I’m not sure if he’s teasing me or just thinks it’s a difference between our species. We still have a lot to learn about each other.

“Very well. We will attempt to find this meeting point and once your crew is safe, I will free my brother and we can leave this planet.”

I exhale a small sigh of relief. I was worried Kaleon would want to find his brother before we looked for my crew. It was his sole purpose for coming here.

“First, you need to eat. If we are lucky, you are already carrying my child.”

“On the first try? That seems like wishful thinking.” I tease. Yesterday the idea of having this alien’s baby was confusing and absurd, but this morning, after spending the night in his arms, my stomach flutters in excitement at the prospect. A family of my own. Honestly, I never thought I would see the day.

“Just the opposite. I would much rather keep trying,” He says before pulling a nutrient bar from a small pack on his belt and handing it to me. The small black rectangle looks completely inedible, but I’ve spent the better part of a year eating prison food, so my stomach should be steel by this point.

I bite into the strange bar and have to force myself not to spit it out immediately.
