Chapter Eleven

Rose was thrust back in time, to the day her father told her, in all brusqueness, that she would, in no uncertain terms, wed the Baron Moncrief. Though she felt her insides coil with dread, she managed to find her voice, “Father, you cannot dictate who I will wed. Not this time.”

“I am your father and will do as I wish.”

Cameron surprised Rose by interjecting, “You can't force me to wed your daughter, sir, for I am ready to do it willingly.”

Rose's mouth hung open as she looked at him strangely. “What are you saying?”

Cameron turned to her then, compassion shining through his eyes. “Rose, I am willing to wed you to make things right, to appease your father.”

“I have reached the age of majority, he cannot dictate who I will wed,” she cried with exasperation. “And there is nothing to make right; we did nothing wrong.”

Cameron turned to her father and said indignantly, “The lady is correct, sir.”

Her father's face was unreadable until his eyes scrunched into angry slits. Rose was certain he did not like being defied. “Get out,” he roared loudly, causing the hairs on the back of her arms to rise.

Though for a brief moment Rose wanted to try and smooth things over with her father, she was wise enough to know that it would do no good. Grabbing the hem of her skirt, she shouldered past Cameron and nearly ran from the house, biting back bitter tears as she did so.

Just like Cameron had promised, there was a carriage waiting. She flung the door open and dashed inside, wanting to put some separation between her and the house that held so many painful memories. Just when she was about to let the pent-up tears free, Cameron appeared in the carriage, her trunk still in his hands. She turned her knees to the side so he could push it inside, then waited for him to take a seat.

“I should show you how a father is supposed to act.” His jaw twitched angrily, and it touched her that he was so affected by her father's behavior.

“What do you mean?”

Those intent green eyes of his settled upon her. “Your father is a tyrant, a miserable wretch of a man. Men are not supposed to feel hate towards those he has sired. My father would never think twice of treating his offspring in such a manner.”

Her lip trembled as she asked, “Do you think my father truly hates me?”

He released a slow breath before moving to her side of the carriage and taking her hands into his own. “Rose, I think your father hates himself, and he's only reflecting that hatred upon you. I don't see how it could be possible for anyone to hate you.”

The lump in her throat burned from trying to keep her emotions at bay. She finally felt the hot tears begin to stream down her cheeks and she didn't bother stopping them. “My husband hated me. I couldn't provide him with an heir and it infuriated him.
