Chapter Twelve
Edwin
Iâm listening to Bree drone on and on about Justinâs many disappointing behaviorsâas if I donât already know them all by heartâand I canât believe I ever dated this woman, let alone asked her to marry me. Even if I put a pin in the whole affair, what is left behind is a carbon copy of me in female form. Bree is particular, unforgiving, and I think she expects me to apologize to her for leaving me three days before our wedding. And Iâm beginning to think one of two things must be trueâeither I am not nearly as prickly as people think I am, or spending time with Calliope has brought about another side of me no one else managed to find except for her.
âAll of that to say, I know I made a mistake. You know my family, Edwin, and I craved adventure. I thought I would find it with him, but it turns out that what I need is your stability. If you had only been a little moreâ¦â She waves her hand around, still ignoring the ridiculously expensive dinner she ordered. Of course, Iâll pay for it, but I do wish sheâd ordered something a tad less expensive if she intended to let it go to waste. âI suppose if you had been more fun, I might not have felt so stifled.â
I canât help that my mouth falls open at her statement confirming that she blames me for the failure of our engagement. The only reason I decided to accompany Bree to this painful dinner was to hear her out, if only so I could move on with zero guilt or regret. She sure makes it easy.
Bree holds up her hands. âIâm not laying all the blame on you, of course. Iâm merely illustrating one of the problems in our relationship that forced me to take such drastic action. Iâm willing to overlook your less adventurous ways in order for us to move on from this, Edwin.â She smiles, but itâs so forced Iâm not sure she believes a word of what she said. âI still have my wedding dress, you know.â
Glancing at her plate, then at her face, I groan at the hundred dollars going cold. Immediately, my thoughts drift to Calliope and how messy she is. At least the woman ate the food she bought rather than ordering the most expensive thing on the menu, only to eat three bites and blame everything that ever went wrong in her life on me.
âWhatever is the matter, Edwin?â
I inhale and prepare to plant the explosives. My plate is entirely empty because I spent an hour listening to Bree prattle on while I ate, keeping my mouth shut each time she jabbed at my personality. I drop my napkin and fold my hands in front of me, desperate to find the right words to tell her to take a leap in public. I donât want to cause a scene, but it might be unavoidable at this point.
