Chapter 14

Maverick stood at the stove the next morning, cooking as he anxiously awaited Dani’s arrival in the kitchen. He relished the idea of her accepting her current reality without a ton of explanation each day because it would afford more time for them to plan. She usually entered the kitchen wary, and sometimes holding a makeshift weapon like a candlestick or even a shoe, but perhaps the second video would make her feel more comfortable.

Something rustled behind him, and Maverick turned to see his wife standing in the doorway. Inquisitive green irises roved over his frame as he let her look her fill. Finally, she opened her mouth to speak.

“So, um, apparently we have some work to do.” She traced the floor with her bare toe as she gazed down. “I’m terrified and have a million questions, but my brain also accepts you’re not going to hurt me.” Lifting her gaze, she said resolutely, “Bring me up to speed and let’s get to it.”

Love for her swelled in his chest as he admired her grit and strength. It was one of the many reasons he’d fallen so hard for her, and he couldn’t control the desire to touch her. Setting down the spatula, he slowly trailed toward her, opening his arms when he was close. She pursed her lips, contemplating, before she stepped forward into his embrace.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” he whispered, kissing her hair.

Drawing back, her fingers clenched his shoulder. “Hi.” She gently ran her fingertips over his chest, covered by his black t-shirt. Maverick let her explore, determined to make her feel comfortable.

“Sit at the table and I’ll answer anything you like,” he said, gesturing toward it before he resumed cooking.

Dani asked him questions as he maneuvered around the kitchen. Eventually, her sisters and Dominic arrived, all sitting at the table and “meeting” Dani as they did each morning. Her resolve seemed firm, and Maverick felt they were crossing a new threshold. It was time to make a solid plan to break into the lab and retrieve the antidote.

After breakfast, they moved to the living room, where they spent hours going over the map of the lab Maverick and Dominic had drawn on a piece of cardboard they’d found in the basement. Eventually, they formulated a plan—one that didn’t involve Dani regaining her memory.

“So, we’ll just assume Dani will still have amnesia when we attack,” Maverick said, pointing at the spot on the map that signified the entrance to the biomedical storage room where she’d hidden the antidote. “You’ll still need to scan your fingerprint, Dani, and Dom and I will search the farmhouse basement to find materials we can use to make explosives to hopefully blow open the locks.”

“I’m still going to try like hell to remember the code,” Dani said.

“I know you will,” Maverick said, reaching over and squeezing her knee.

“I have a new tea I created yesterday. It’s got some herbs and mushrooms that should help with memory.”

“Thanks,” Dani said, grinning. “You’re my botany whiz, so I look forward to trying it.
