Charlie went into the dressing room and Marguerite was gathering up all the cosmetics back into the carryall box. She was tossing the cosmetics into the box with just a tinge of angst.

He wanted to make sure he saw her reaction, so he walked right up to and in front of her. “Marguerite, Darius needs you to be the funeral director tonight at the wake,” said Charlie, “because we have to go somewhere.”.

She looked up wide eyed. “He wants me to act as funeral director? By myself?”

“Yes, that’s what he said. He wants you to wear one of your professional dresses and cover for him. He told me to make sure I tell you to be sure to wear the funeral director lapel pin,” said Charlie with a big smile. He could tell she was tickled pink.

“You were right, Charlie, he is counting on me for a lot of things, like you,” said Marguerite. She suddenly looked like she had a new lease on life.

“Now I’m nervous. I hope I don’t forget anything,” said Marguerite.

“It’s going to be a small wake. Mr. Green is 80 years old and it’ll be mostly family members and a few of his neighbors. It will be an easy one. Just be attentive and caring.”

“Okay.” She was beaming.

“He wants me to go over the whole process with you now, okay?”

“Sure. I’m ready.”

Charlie walked Marguerite through the process explaining what she needed to focus on before the people came, during the wake, during the religious prayer service and how to host when they all began leaving. He could tell she was excited and thoughts of her demotion dissipated right before his eyes. A person was supposed to have proper training in order to present themselves as a funeral director, but Darius had a way of fudging his way around all the laws.

On his way back down to the cave, he thought, Darius was right, I think she has let go of the Megan chair.
