One by one, the PTF beamed in, each carrying a tray of food.

“Congratulations,” Jack said. “Bay baked these. She's on her way, too.”

“What is this?” Cassio asked.

“Your reception.” Jack grinned. “Plus, an impromptu meeting, since we're all in one spot.

Hope you don't mind.”

Cassio rolled her eyes. “Nah. It's my life. A reception slash spy meeting.”

“Are we all here?” The President asked.

“One more,” Dante said.

Just as he spoke, one more figure stepped off the elevator. A Stargazer dressed in leather,

with long honey brown hair tied back in a carefree style. His bronze eyes glittered against

tanned skin, making the blond highlights in his hair appear more pronounced.

“Miah.” Cassiopeia leaned toward him for a cheek-kiss.

“Cassio. Congratulations. You didn't tell me you were engaged.”

“It's new. I just got engaged last night.”

Hayze approached. “It was a short engagement. I snapped her up as soon as she said

yes.”

Miah grinned. “Smart move.”

The men shook hands.

“Everyone, meet Miah Toledo. He's heading the Council on the new reservation in West

Virginia, so far unnamed. Miah's here for a little PTF training before he heads there,” Jonas

said.

“We have a situation,” the President said. “A long time ago, the spy training program was

implemented. A top secret list of potential candidates rotated, so confidential the candidates

themselves had no idea they were even on the list. However, like a lot of secrets do,

speculation over who was named came out and many believed those rumors to be fact.

Assassins weren't sent after the candidates, since they didn't know they were potentials and

weren't an actual threat yet. Instead, the individual's lives were destroyed. The first one was

particularly unfair and always stuck with me. A female who had risen through the ranks to be

the best in her field. A scientist. A doctor. Loved by everyone. Her reputation was ruined by

the scandal of sexual harassment. She was sued for taking advantage of an employee of a

lesser rank, when he was actually being trained to stalk her. It was devastating. When I

became President I was able to expunge her criminal record. But no one knew what personal

damage had been done. Would she be the same outstanding citizen she was before? Would

she be tainted by hatred, bitter beyond reason? Many would. However, we needn't have

worried. She's never failed in any capacity as a human being. Cassiopeia, you have suffered

enough. You no longer need to fear your secret coming out. This entire PTF will protect you.”

“Cassio, we've got your back,” Jack whispered.

“Who was he?” Hayze asked. Though his voice was mild, his eyes glowed gold. The

humans stared.

“His name is George Stefan. Now, he's after another person, but he's more dangerous.

He's stepped up from ruining careers to actual assassinations, and he's good. Almost like he's

in two places at once. The woman in question is Morgana Reilly and she's another expert in

her field. We need to get her to apply here, where she'll be safe, before she's his next victim.

She is not expendable. She has the same type of training as Cassio, and can be a huge asset for

our side.”

Hayze clenched his fists.
