DECEMBER 1815
Jamie was impossibly lovely.
How had he convinced this bonnie, brave lass to marry him?
Kieran stared at her, wonder and awe fizzing in his veins.
She smiled back, eyes shy for once, a blush climbing her cheeks.
They stood on a secluded stretch of beach along the endless shoreline of Sydney Harbor, the warm sun sinking toward the rolling hills of the hinterland, rays of light fanning upward, painting the clouds in pink and orange.
They had rowed across the inlet from Mrs. Macquarieâs Chairâa bench carved into the sandstone where the current governorâs wife could sit to watch arriving shipsâand then picked their way through the rocks until they reached a sandy stretch hidden by a stand of eucalyptus.
âAre ye ready then?â Ewan asked. Their friend held a silk ribbon in his hand, prepared to witness their handfasting and solemnize it by tying Kieranâs hand to Jamieâs.
âAye,â Kieran said.
Jamie nodded.
His Jamie was a proper lass today, dressed as fine as any lady.
âI want to feel pretty, Kieran,â she had whispered to him that morning. âJust for today. Just for a wee while. I want to remember what it feels like to be Miss Eilidh Fyffe. I want to be a lady marrying her gentleman.â
He had purchased her a gown at a second-hand shop in Sydneyâa pretty blue frock that clung to her figure and sent his thoughts tumbling.
Here on the beach, Kieran took Jamieâs hands in his, staring into her quicksilver eyes and the vibrant sunset colors reflected there.
Before they could begin the handfasting ceremony, she popped up on her tiptoes and whispered into his ear. âI have a surprise for ye later.â
He pulled back and wiggled his eyebrows at her.
She blushed more deeply and squeezed his hands. âA different sort of surprise. Youâll like it.â
He smiled, but then it felt as if he hadnât stopped smiling in weeks. Even Cuthie had commented on it.
âAre ye sure there isnae something I should know about?â the captain asked. âYe seem a bit too happy.â
Kieran had brushed it off. âI find Sydney agrees with me.â
That was true.
There was an energy in Sydneyâfrom the nearly-constant building activity around the Customs house to the flood of new immigrants following the end of the war with Napoleon. The city pulsed with life, with an optimistic rush to embrace its future.
In short, it was not a bad place to anchor.
Every day, it seemed, he and Jamie had the same conversationâhe refused to call it an argument, though it perhaps drifted into that territory more often than notâabout her possibly remaining in Sydney.
Kieran wished it.
Jamie refused.
âI will not remain behind without ye,â she said each time he suggested it.
Kieran didnât want to leave The Minerva, but he also couldnât stomach the risk they took by keeping Jamie aboard ship.
Finally, he had broached the topic of his leaving with Cuthie, hinting that he had been offered another position with a ship in Sydney. After all, Kieran could hardly tell Cuthie the truthâ
Surprise! The carpenterâs mate is a woman and my wife!
Cuthie had been intransigent.
