LANGSTON HUGHES TO CARL VAN VECHTEN, APRIL 5, 1941
Dear Carlo,
Enclosed is my article about James Weldon.10 I do hope that even at this late date it will be of some use. Please feel free to revise or correct it as need may dictate. Or if there is something more you might wish me to do to it or about it, please let me know. . . . If it would be of any aid to the Committee, I would be happy to make an appearance or two for them in a reading of my poems and an appeal for funds at any time or place they might arrange—without charge on my own part—other than transportation involved. . . . Any blanks or other material the Committee might wish distributed in these parts, I’d be delighted to give out to persons I know here.
Noel had 14 to luncheon today in honor of Mann.11 He and his wife, youngest son and the daughter whose husband was lost at sea were here and we found the two charming. Mr. Mann is building a house in Brent-wood hear Los Angeles and, since his son lives at Carmel, expects to be hereabouts often.
Moe Gale is trying to get me to do a series of radio sketches based on LITTLE HAM.12 I reckon I should try, but the air never intrigued me much. And the hours I have wasted writing for the theatre and getting nowhere have caused me to more than ever prefer LITERATURE between book covers.
Wish I could see NATIVE SON13 and PAL JOEY.14 If I just had a plane and a pilot! How I would get about.
Two pale emerald frogs with onyx eyes and a pearly snail to you,
Sincerely,
Langston
