Ten: The After Party

-The Weeknd

“I don’t even know why you making me cook this shit, you know I don’t like cooking in nobody’s kitchen but my own,” Yummy sassed while whipping her wrist in a circular motion. “Jerrico has all this fancy chef shit that I’m scared to even get dirty.”

The orange sweet potato filling that would be consumed for a late dessert was the last thing on Yummy’s mind and because she would much rather entertain the toxicity that had been occupying her mind since crawling out of bed that morning, she’d been giving Goody nonstop attitude.

“Bitch, I’m just about sick of you,” Goody stopped washing the fresh corn long enough to say. “Been moaning and groaning since you got here. If you’re mad, then be that but don’t come up in my husband’s shit acting ghetto.”

Yummy sucked her teeth and rolled her eyes in Goody’s direction. Everything in her wanted to go off the deep end on her cousin, but that would be the worst thing for either of them. Surely, for her because it was no doubt that Yummy would regret it the moment they finished tearing each other apart.

“The hell is your problem anyway?”

To tell her or not tell her? Yummy weighed the pros and cons in her head before speaking because Goody was one of those people that didn’t know how to leave stuff alone. Long after Yummy was finished with a topic, Goody would be right back in her face with more questions or opinions, and honestly, Yummy just didn’t have the energy.

“What Lucky do now?”

With very little effort, Yummy flipped the small step stool near her foot over onto the kitchen floor. Goody’s eyes went to it before going back to Yummy.

“Yeah,” she walked over and picked the stool back up, putting it in the closet. “Something is definitely wrong with you. Over here trying to scuff up my hardwood floors. Spill the tea or get out before you get throwed out.”

Not even a full second later they both laughed.

“Man, Goody,” Yummy sighed while leaning over the island. “I’m so tired of that man it don’t make no sense. Now you know I went to get my hair done yesterday morning right?”

Goody nodded with her arms folded across her chest, completely tuned in.

“How about I saw that girl Megan that Lucky used to mess with,”

“The fake pregnant one?”

Goody inquired about the embarrassing pregnancy scare that Lucky had tossed Yummy into unwillingly a couple of days before Christmas the prior year. Yummy could still smell the homemade apple pie that had been baking in her stove when Megan had shown up to her apartment.

She’d worked tirelessly the entire morning to get that crust right, for her to lose every ounce of her appetite before having a chance to indulge in a piece. In Megan’s hand was a bag filled with used pregnancy tests, swearing they were the evidence of a bastard baby she’d conceived with Yummy’s long-time boyfriend, Lucky.

“Yes her. How about the hoe is pregnant for real this time and told me it was Lucky’s.
