CHAPTER 42

KRISTINA

Abbie knew something. Kristina leaned forward, clutching the edge of her desk. She tried to concentrate on work yet couldn’t.

Panic swirled around her, a relentless grip that made her ill. Abbie’s entire visit was suffused with suspicion and disdain, her attempt at civility obviously designed to mess with Kristina.

But it didn’t mean Abbie had proof of anything, right? She was just fishing. Calm down. Breathe. You know what happens when you panic.

Why did Abbie mention Oxford, though? She couldn’t possibly have uncovered Kristina’s secret shame? Stay calm. Abbie was testing you, bluffing.

Letting go of the desk, Kristina stood and ambled toward the window. Splashes of sunshine seeped through. She needed a minute to calm her riotous insides that had ignored all the alerts her brain doled out about remaining calm. She could do that. She had to before her first meeting of the day.

Do not underestimate Abbie, her brain screamed. Callum told Kristina the same thing at her apartment, after that awful dinner at Abbie and Ty’s house.

Could Abbie have discovered that Kristina only attended Oxford for one year? She was not proud of the fact that she quit her master’s program because boredom set in. She wanted to be out in the world, making things happen, meeting people, traveling.

Perhaps she opted for Oxford too soon after she graduated from Yale. A few years off before diving into another rigorous academic program made sense in hindsight. But at the time, Kristina had been trying to forget: the miscarriage, Ty, his betrayal, her broken heart. Taking on a master’s program seemed like the perfect anecdote to her troubles.

Kristina wouldn’t give Abbie another chance to ambush her or suspect Kristina of malfeasance or make thinly veiled accusations or whatever. Abbie might have escaped death in Jamaica, but Kristina wasn’t done with the woman yet. Not by a longshot.
