Chapter Nine

Feeling the urgency now, more than ever, Aunt Margaret did her best to get Beatrice to agree to go to the ball, now more determined than ever. She was ready to do all that she could to stop any possible union between her niece and a lower ranked man. Christopher assured her that Robert would be there to look after Beatrice and would protect her from any unsuitable men that approached her.

Although hesitant, Beatrice agreed, hoping attending the ball would stop the scrutiny of every move she made when she went out into the garden. She knew Aunt Margaret and Jane were always spying on her, ready to do whatever it took to undermine her friendship with a man she was quite sure she had fallen in love with.

Beatrice felt nervous seeing as it had been only before the accident that she had been to a ball and not after. The pressure of finding a rich and handsome husband was piling on her shoulders and it aided to her anxiety. Christopher had been overjoyed to hear that the day had come where he could showcase his son and he had rushed to enlist the guidelines of what he must do.

“Robert, today is your most important day. You fail now, and you can forget everything!” Christopher said highly excited and motivated.

Robert nodded, agreeing. “Your first impression must be strong and charming; she will find both things irresistible. Since the lady in question is such that I know her and she is of the level of a noble, you must also be a noble,” Christopher instructed his son. “I believe I can manage quite a lot, but how am I to be a noble man if I am not one?” Robert asked, confused.

“You must impersonate as an Earl and allow her to see you with that vision, once she falls in love with you there will be little need to carry on as such and you may reveal your true identity to her,” Christopher suggested shamelessly.

Robert nodded his head, pleased with his father’s plan and how much it benefitted them both. The two of them discussed in detail how to execute their preparations right down to the finer details.

The day of the ball, Beatrice wore a long ivory colored dress that her Mother had had stitched for her exclusively for a special occasion. Looking at herself in the mirror wearing that dress, she saw the uncanny resemblance, the same auburn colored hair and the same smile of her Mother’s smiling back at her.

Oh Mother, if only you were here now. I do not know what I am doing and the people around me make me uncomfortable, instead of thinking them to be my closest and dearest, I sense that they may not have my best interest with them.

Putting her thoughts about Anthony and her parents aside, Beatrice was set out to make differences in her life and thus she would need to start anew and take chances. Something much easier said than done.
