Referencing census returns

Census returns that identify individuals are arguably another great form of vital record (so BMDC is often used as an alternative acronym for the key genealogical records) and are hugely beneficial in helping the researcher identify family structures. A generic style can be used that will cover most censuses from most countries.

Elements in the reference are:

• Source type. [Census returns]

• Country. [this always qualifies the source type as specific formats of record vary from place to place]

• Place. [for example, parish, county]

• Date of census. [the day when it was due, if possible]

• NAME, given name(s). [person being enumerated in the census]

• Record identifier. [this varies by administration but should include the Registration District and other things such as Series or Class; Piece; Folio; and Page or the ScotlandsPeople data number. There is a Schedule number for the 1911 English/Welsh census and a Form number for the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses]

• Collection: Name of collection. [if the item was found within a database with multiple collections, then give the name of the collection. You do not need to do this for ScotlandsPeople since it is the only online source for original source images]

• URL. [if the item was found online. See the URL guidelines for details]
