Chapter 30
March 14, 2012
The table in the private study room in the library was covered with notes, pens, and highlighters, and both Sonia and Jayne were typing on their laptops. The corners of Soniaâs lips curled upward, mirroring the warmth spreading inside her chest. Even though she couldnât see her very well, Sonia turned her sparkling eyes toward Jayne, a silent acknowledgement of the connection between them. Sonia was relieved at finding a reliable partner, and happiness bubbled inside her to be working with someone she knew to be as devoted to her studies as she was.
âSonia, Iâm so glad you agreed to be my partner for this class. Justine and Scott have both been complaining to me about how little their partners are doing for the project.â
A wide, genuine smile grew on Soniaâs face. âThanks. I think we make a good team. We are both hardworking, so neither of us feels like the other isnât doing their fair share.â
Sonia was happy to pair up with Jayne for this semester-long group project in PR media production. They needed to create a campaign for a game that included a digital presentation, print materials, and compelling copy. Sonia was happy to take on the digital presentation; she had become that comfortable with technology. Plus, sheâd convinced Jayne that her background in fashion design would help her to create a visually pleasing presentation.
Sonia, brimming with confidence, turned her laptop around to show Jayne the layout she had completed so far. I know having that class on color theory during my first year will be a big benefit to this project. When it comes to color, I really know what I am doing.
âWhat do you think?â
Jayne paused before answering. âOh, thatâs... thatâs nice. But I thought we were going to keep a more neutral palette?â
Jayneâs unenthusiastic tone cooled Soniaâs eagerness some, for she had expected Jayneâs usual cheerful and excited response. Sonia looked at her computer screen and swallowed. The bubble of happiness inside her popped.
âWell, I know weâve been talking about trends, and how neutral is sought after in some markets. But this is something we are marketing to kids. I just think bright colors would be a better fit.â Sonia turned her hopeful face to Jayne, certain her words would convince Jayne she made the right choice for their campaign.
Jayne, who had been leaning over the computer screen with Sonia, leaned back in her chair. âYes, I can see how bright colors and kids could work well together. But really, if you think about it, the parents will be buying this, so we have to appeal to the kids and the parents.â
A speck of heat blossomed in Soniaâs chest and she could feel her heart rate pick up.
âI think the parents will be looking for something that would appeal to their kids, so we should focus on bright colors.â
Jayne crossed her arms. âWhat if we found something more in the middle? Like, have one bright color and then less intense colors that are monochromatic.
