Chapter 7: Makenna
âMAKENNA!! WHAT has gotten into you?!â he called after me as I marched up the stairs in a full rage. We had just gotten back from our wedding party brunch and I was beyond livid. Not only didnât he fire the little Ms. Wedding Planner, but he had given her free control to make any changes to our wedding that she felt necessary. The way she had been staring at him all morning looked as if she used a bit of her own persuasion methods to keep her little job. I was sick of sitting back and pretending to be blind to a man that I was rapidly losing feelings over.
He chased after me and found me packing my things as quickly as I could. Snatching up the suitcase, he looked at me with pleading eyes. The confident business man was replaced with a frightened little boy; I was almost tempted to stay. Almost. I reached for the suitcase causing him to pull it further out of reach. We stood there staring at each other; both pleading different cases. His, one of forgiveness and mine, one of solitude. I needed time alone to consider everything. The past few months between us had been anything, but pleasant and I was simply tired of it. I didnât want to give up, but something had to give between us. The unexplained marks of passion, the late nights, and sudden irritability was more than pre-wedding jitters. Something was going on with him and I wanted to know. I needed to know.
âYouâve changed,â I mumbled through a shaky breath, breaking our eye contact.
He placed the suitcase on the floor and took a seat on the bed, motioning for me to join him. I declined his offer with a simple shake of the head and crossed my arms. I wasnât about to break just yet.
âYou have to talk to me, Richard. Your behavior lately canât be blamed on this wedding. What is it thatâs making you into a man that I can no longer respect?â
He looked up as if he was searching for the right words before sighing deeply. âDo really love me, Makenna?â
âUh uh. You will not make me the villain in all of this. All I have done is shown you that I want and need you, so donât try to make it seem as if I donât love you.â
He looked at me through sincere eyes causing me to close mine. âI know you care about me, but do you truly love me as more than a friend?â
âI do. But your actions as of late makes it really hard to love you when Iâm not even 100% sure if youâve been honest with me. You work all kinds of hours now, youâre almost never home, youâve been distant, coming home with various unexplained marks that I canât help but believe has come from sexual acts, and you donât even look at me the same,â I admitted, while beginning to pace the room. âEven before weâd gotten together you used to look at me like I held the key to your heart.
