After a full week of lessons and spending time with Maui every morning, I was almost ashamed of how smitten I was with him. After my ten oâclock class, Maui would meet me and walk down to the beach or to one of the local restaurants for lunch.
Since accepting my position as his official tour guide, Iâd taken him on a bike ride up Tala Trail to see the waterfall. Even after taking the journey a thousand times, the mile long bike ride was always breathtaking. The lush greenery, the birds, the exotic plants, and fruit trees were an embodiment of what I loved about my home.
Although I once dreamed of traveling the world, Munfuni would always be my home. I loved everything about it from the small town feel to the tropical weather. I could do without the rainy season, but otherwise, I absolutely loved Munfuni. Everyone who visited grew to love it too.
I liked how Munfuni was an attraction for tourists, but not overrun to the point where it was a tourist town. I didnât want anything to take away from the authenticity of our land. I think the distance from the airport and the fact that you had to take a boat to get to the island slowed down a lot of the traffic. Whatever the case was, I was grateful.
âWell, here it is,â I announced, slowing to a stop and putting my feet on the ground as I came to a patch of grass in front of Tui Falls.
When Maui didnât respond, I thought he had fallen behind or something. I looked over my shoulder to see him climbing off of his bicycle with his mouth hanging open.
As he put the kickstand down, his gaze was fixed on the falls. Tui Falls spanned about a hundred feet overhead. We were crazy enough to jump off some of the lower platforms when I was a wild teenager, but Iâd never been crazy enough to jump from the highest point.
âIâm speechless,â Maui said barely over a whisper as he walked over to my side.
âSteals my breath every time.â I beamed with pride.
âI could sit out here all day,â Maui stated.
âFortunately, we have all day.â I smiled.
Removing my backpack, I took out the blanket Iâd packed and spread it across the grass. Maui helped me to sit before taking his position by my side. I leaned my body against him. I didnât really know why it just felt right.
I rifled through my backpack retrieving the snacks and books that I brought along for our outing. Two of the books were actually journals that I wanted to use to write in like I often did.
âIs that mango?â Maui asked, picking up one of the bags of fruit.
âIt sure is. I remember you saying it was one of your favorite fruits when I told you they grew here.â I continued to pull things out of my bag, retrieving the bamboo forks I brought along for us to eat with. After removing the contents from the bag, I snuggled up against Maui and enjoyed the view.
