Chapter 14

As I expected, Mrs. Vayle didn’t give me any praise when I handed in my assignment, just more assignments.

Still, I was moving through the material much faster than I had the first time around. I was already putting together and taking apart longer and more complex strings of runes. It had taken me a month of tears and frustration to get this deep into the textbook the first time around; this time, I’d done it in days.

It gave me hope. Maybe I’d be able to learn some actually useful magic before my time ran out this time around.

The next day, I went out into the garden to work on my assignment again. There were other places to sit for, but I still went for the bench in the shady alcove. It felt like the most private place in the garden, the most peaceful.

“There you are,” said Caleb behind me, just as I was preparing to sit.

I jumped and nearly fell over.

“Caleb!” I said, trying to sound pleasantly surprised and not freaking out. “Don’t you have other things you have to do? I know you’re really busy with things more important than me. I don’t want to take up your time.”

I genuinely hadn’t expected him. This had not happened the first time around.

The first time around, I hadn’t seen Caleb for a full week after the Full Moon Gathering. I’d spent that week sick with fear and dread, beating my head against assignments I struggled to understand, haunted by the whispers of the staff. I was convinced that I’d mortally disappointed him at the Full Moon Gathering, that he didn’t want me anymore. All I could think about was how I could get him to forgive me. When he finally reappeared after all that time, acting as if nothing had happened, I’d run up to him like a puppy.

So why had he turned up after only days this time around?

Caleb took my arm gallantly; I had no choice but to let him. “Where did you get the idea that my duties are more important than my mate? No matter how busy I am, I’ll make time for you.”

His thumb stroked the inside of my wrist. I shivered, wishing I could pull away. “I don’t want to make trouble for you—”

“You’ll be making trouble for me if you don’t come with me and have some fun,” he declared, pulling me along. “I love how enthusiastic you are about your assignments. How much you think of me. I think you deserve a reward.”

I wondered about that, as he steered me out the gates of the mansion. Was he really trying to throw me a bone? Something about that seemed…off.

Also, how had he known to find me in the alcove? It was out-of-the-way enough that someone probably told him. I supposed a gardener might have seen me…but I couldn’t help but remember that glimpse I’d caught of Eleanor’s strawberry blonde hair.

We came to the training ground, where a number of other shifters were already busy, the older ones sparring, the younger ones going through drills.
