Closing the door to the Minister’s office behind him, Jotch nodded to the two guards. He hoped the folder’s worth of paper stuffed into his pants wasn’t very noticeable.

The smaller of the two guards walked Jotch to the elevator and bade him a nonchalant goodbye.

Jotch returned the gesture as the doors closed.

The moment they did, he fell against the wall and nearly shrieked from the thrill. He rang the bell for the ground floor and the cart began moving.

Of course the guards here wouldn’t suspect him. For Almighty’s sake, he had brought them his mother's pastries. And the Minister was known for being sweet to his underlings. The further down the ladder, the nicer he was.

By his math, Jotch would have roughly fifteen minutes to get out of the Ministry before the papers were noticed missing. Then he would begin the second phase of the plan: contacting an apprentice Inspector who had lost his mentors to this lie. According to everything Jotch had read on the man’s history kept at the M.O.T., the officer was his best bet in finding an ally willing to help. Jotch had carefully examined many candidates connected to those who perished that night. Holden, still actively on the force, would be both open to the truth, and connected enough to get Jotch out of the city.

His glee was cut off as a wave of nausea hit him. His breakfast indeed hit the floor.
