Chapter 6 (Jaime): The Past
I took a long time to figure out what the fuck to say.
We sat there, neither of us saying a word to one another, and to say it was awkward was probably the understatement of the year.
Neither of us knew how to come clean about any of this, did we? I sure as shit didnât know how heâd react, and it was clear that he was here for his own reasons. Finally, finally I said it.
âWhy?â I said.
He looked at me with confusion. âWhy what?â
âWhy are you here, Reaper? You havenât said a word to me other than to fuck off for the last week and a half. And now you want to talk to me?â
He hesitated, but then, he sighed. âI know. Iâm sorry about that. I had ⦠a lot of feelings, and I was struggling to figure them out right now.â
âGee, you couldâve fooled me.â I knew that it wasnât the best way to really start things, but then, he continued.
âI know Iâve been a fucking dick to you. There was just a lot that I needed to figure out. And thereâs the whole mess with the club and everything. But I want to talk right now, so if thereâs anything you want to say to start, right now Iâm all ears, honey,â he said.
He was. He didnât stop looking at me. It felt so weird, because this was the first time weâd done this in years, and it felt like a whole different world.
âI guess I should ⦠I should begin with ⦠Iâm sorry,â I said.
He looked at me, and I balled my hands on my thighs, trying to keep it together.
âIâm sorry for doing what I did back then, for leaving you back when we were young and stupid. I made a huge mistake. I know that itâs been ⦠a series of fucking bullshit, but I knew that I shouldnât have done that,â I said.
âYeah.â
âIâm also sorry for leaving you for Tony. That was one of the biggest fucking mistakes of my life. I canât believe I went off with him because I wanted a high, and well, thatâs what landed me in prison.â
âI see.â
âYeah. After that whole mess, I stuck around with Tony, but we broke up afterwards. It just didnât work out. But I was so goddamned focused on getting a high that Iâd do anything, and then of course, I started selling, and I turned to harder drugs. When I got busted for it and they found the unregistered gun on me, I thought I was royally shitfucked. But the lawyer I had was the one who got my boss out, and he managed to only get me ten years. They let me out after five for good behavior. Maybe thereâs a reason for that,â I told him.
âMaybe. So it really was with him that started all of this,â he said.
âWell, it wasnât just that, Reaper. The drugs were a big part of it, but when I was young, I was raised in a household that had all of that shit.
