Chapter 6 (Jaime): The Past

I took a long time to figure out what the fuck to say.

We sat there, neither of us saying a word to one another, and to say it was awkward was probably the understatement of the year.

Neither of us knew how to come clean about any of this, did we? I sure as shit didn’t know how he’d react, and it was clear that he was here for his own reasons. Finally, finally I said it.

“Why?” I said.

He looked at me with confusion. “Why what?”

“Why are you here, Reaper? You haven’t said a word to me other than to fuck off for the last week and a half. And now you want to talk to me?”

He hesitated, but then, he sighed. “I know. I’m sorry about that. I had … a lot of feelings, and I was struggling to figure them out right now.”

“Gee, you could’ve fooled me.” I knew that it wasn’t the best way to really start things, but then, he continued.

“I know I’ve been a fucking dick to you. There was just a lot that I needed to figure out. And there’s the whole mess with the club and everything. But I want to talk right now, so if there’s anything you want to say to start, right now I’m all ears, honey,” he said.

He was. He didn’t stop looking at me. It felt so weird, because this was the first time we’d done this in years, and it felt like a whole different world.

“I guess I should … I should begin with … I’m sorry,” I said.

He looked at me, and I balled my hands on my thighs, trying to keep it together.

“I’m sorry for doing what I did back then, for leaving you back when we were young and stupid. I made a huge mistake. I know that it’s been … a series of fucking bullshit, but I knew that I shouldn’t have done that,” I said.

“Yeah.”

“I’m also sorry for leaving you for Tony. That was one of the biggest fucking mistakes of my life. I can’t believe I went off with him because I wanted a high, and well, that’s what landed me in prison.”

“I see.”

“Yeah. After that whole mess, I stuck around with Tony, but we broke up afterwards. It just didn’t work out. But I was so goddamned focused on getting a high that I’d do anything, and then of course, I started selling, and I turned to harder drugs. When I got busted for it and they found the unregistered gun on me, I thought I was royally shitfucked. But the lawyer I had was the one who got my boss out, and he managed to only get me ten years. They let me out after five for good behavior. Maybe there’s a reason for that,” I told him.

“Maybe. So it really was with him that started all of this,” he said.

“Well, it wasn’t just that, Reaper. The drugs were a big part of it, but when I was young, I was raised in a household that had all of that shit.
