“Did the Alliance tell you how the Empyrean Well moves every century or so?” Sage’s voice carries from inside the gallery.

The natural wood floors, twenty-foot ceiling, and artificial lighting copies that of Elysium Edge, his gallery in Wakefield. Except here, art covers every inch of the expansive walls, mimicking Hesperian. But in the safe house Maddox created, the art felt vibrant and alive. Here, every piece seems caged and terrified. I quickly skim the paintings, printing plates, and sculptures decorating the room. There are so many, my head spins trying to take them all in from the doorway. It’s as if the Met was collapsing in on itself. I step over the threshold for a better look.

Sage saunters around a marble statue over thirteen feet tall that’s prominently displayed in the middle of the room. “Did you also know the Well uses its power for transfer and not protection when it shifts? I discovered that fact when I acquired this piece, Abduction of the Sabine Women, in the Renaissance.” When he flicks his finger in the air, the base spins. The three figures twirl in an orchestrated dance. The terrified woman stretches her hands to the sky, seeking release. A muscular man grabs her waist while crushing a horror-struck suitor underfoot. Sage smiles adoringly. “Beautiful, don’t you agree?”

The sculpture is beautiful. But I’m not about to reveal more than I should. “It’s disturbing,” are the only words I offer.

“That too.” Sage shrugs. “Were you aware that the Well is housed within the Garden?” He wanders to a giant canvas, each question prodding me to speak. “And that you alone can connect the realms by using the fullness of powers I have made available to you?” Sage stands with his hands behind his back, taking in the painting. “It is quite simple in fact, although it took me centuries to discover the secret. A Dissenting Seer”—he holds out one palm—“and a Guardian with strong lineage”—he holds out the other hand—“join together to create a rare beauty who offers the perfect balance needed to unlock the realms by utilizing both sides of your power at once in its presence. Doing so ‘confuses’ the realms, thereby granting access for both sides to see what only you can.”

The Alliance barely fed me anything compared to the bounty of information that freely flows from Sage’s mouth. Regardless, I weave around another set of glass cases and a bronze sculpture. According to Sage, my mother lies somewhere behind the next set of double doors.

“Are you aware of all the powers you possess? I have no doubt the Alliance has withheld that revelation from you.”

I stop, hidden behind the twirling sculpture. I know I can control the creatures and see how they travel in black mist when no one else could. But I didn’t think I could do more.

“Not only do you possess the means to wield the Alliance’s weapons against them—weapons that would never strike their flesh otherwise—but you also hold the unique power of seeing the Current move in the world, and can taste of its richness.
