Stupid. That’s what she was being, Elyne thought as she walked toward the faery mound where the dragons hid. She had no clue how to convince the Elven King to send troops to help the Fae cause. He would probably laugh at her, tell her to go home to her burning palace. The Elves had no interest in fighting and hadn’t in thousands and thousands of years. Their last fight had been against the Fae and that hadn’t turned out so well for them, had it?

She bowed her head, her chin on her chest. “Gods…give me strength.” She whispered it in the wind, a silent little prayer to help her through her latest foolishness. She needed strength from the gods, or anyone. Strength to carry on and make it past this war. Should they survive she would tell Derron she loved him. If he rejected her then, she would know it wasn’t meant to be.

Hello, my friend.

Aura’s voice was in Elyne’s head before she saw her. Looking up, the dragon stared at her with those golden eyes. Aura blinked slowly, nodding as if in greeting. The way she sat reminded Elyne of a cat. Her front legs were straight, her back legs tucked up close to her body and her great tail with barbs on the end curled around her. The gossamer wings were flattened against her, seeming to be invisible next to her shiny scales.

“Aura.”

You have need of me?

“Aye. I want you to take me to the Elven King in the Woodlands. King Urdithane.”

The Elven King? Thousands of years have passed since we have spoken to the Elves.

It sounded more like rumination than an objection. “Then you’ll take me?”

I will fly you there, aye.

“Good. The sooner we go, the better. I’m on official palace business.”

Aura lowered her head and allowed Elyne to climb up on her back at the base of her neck. Elyne gripped the scales, leaning down close to her as Aura stood on all fours, spreading her beautiful iridescent wings. As her wings went up, she crouched and pushed off from the ground, straight up into the pink sky singed with afternoon light.

When Aura took to the air, it made Elyne’s stomach clench and she held on as best she could. The flight to the Elven King would be a short one for the dragon with the twenty-foot wingspan. Looking down, she watched the world flash by in browns and greens and gold. Every now and then she spied the rich blue sparkling waters of a loch, sunlight glistening off the smooth glass surface.

As they approached the Woodlands, she could see the crumbling walls of what was left of the Queen’s Palace. Of course, she would see the palace as they passed overhead. How could she forget? It hadn’t occurred to her and now, remembering the fate of the palace once more, she had to see for herself the destruction. She had to know if it was true.

“Fly near the palace,” she shouted into the wind.
