Light your own way

For her series ‘Unseen Forest’, the British photographer Tina Hillier spent one night alone in South African woodland. Every so often, prompted by fear or curiosity, she would take a picture and, in so doing, illuminate the black with the light of a flash.

The flash helped Hillier navigate her way through the forest, although at the same time its immediacy was disorientating. Its hard, directional quality isolated details, but her photographs do not form a map of the forest. Instead it remains mysterious, enticing and threatening, much like Hillier’s relationship with the unfamiliar country she was visiting.

Artificial light allows you to take control of what a place looks like.

When we photograph a place we often work with natural light, particularly if it’s outside. But when you bring your own light to a location you transform it into something else. Whether it’s a simple flash gun or large, elaborate set-up, artificial light means you can make the location look and feel exactly the way you want.

Hillier’s use of artificial light creates tension between the seen and unseen. Somewhere along that boundary of light and dark our imaginations take control.
