The lyrics of “The Wanderer,” or “El Andariego,” could be heard throughout the cemetery in unison with the chorus of the farewells. My family could not stop crying; no one could refrain from expressing their grief, including my normally strong and stoic father. There was not a single dry eye in sight. That night, my grandmother, doña Cleotilde—or Tilde, as everyone called her—was inconsolable. She cried to the point of having no more tears left to cry. During the ceremony, as the song continued, she looked up toward the heavens, and in a soft, weak voice said, “I miss you so much, my old, sweet man. So much that I’m going to die without you.”
