CHAPTER 18

RAZ

I don’t think I have ever been that scared in my life. I have fought thousands of battles and been hurt in every way possible. But when that dirt buried me, I almost panicked. I swear if it hadn’t been for all the training Dad put us through as kids, I'm not sure I would have made it out of that hole alive.

I pull Katherine close to me, I'm not sure who is holding who right now. If it hadn’t been for her voice above me, guiding me to the surface, I know that hole would have been my final resting place.

Her sobs tear at my heart, but right now my main focus is to get us both cleaned up and off this planet before the next thing comes along and takes someone else she loves.

I limp along, simply putting one foot in front of the other. Katherine’s body seems to be getting warmer the longer I hold onto her. I'm only steps from the front door when grandfather comes running out holding the young boy who showed up a few rotations ago in his arms. Victoria struggles to keep hold of the small black pup in her arms.

“RaZ, we have to leave now! ANDI just broadcasted it throughout the mountain that a massive storm is headed this way. He said from space he can see that it is destroying everything in its path. ANDI said it's less than a half-hour away. We have to lift off now, or that storm will tear you all apart.”

I follow behind them as quickly as my leg will let me. My wings are practically shredded… If they weren’t, my shredded leg wouldn’t be an issue. I see grandfather and Victoria rush into the first shuttle. Just as they start to shut the door the little black pup runs out. I can hear Victoria call out its name as she opens the door back up.

I hadn’t realized until I heard the pup barking that the other wolves were still digging in the dirt behind us. I stop to call out for them, unknowing if they would come to me or not. When the small black pup lets out a roar that should not be possible from such a small animal, the wolves stop what they are doing immediately and run towards the shuttle. I don’t speak wolf, but whatever the black one said, it sure got their attention.

I step up and onto the platform of the second shuttle, but I wait until I see Victoria shut the door of the first one before I go inside. I hit the door closer with my elbow and then set Katherine down into the other pilot's chair. I snap the restraints in place around her. I no longer sit down in the main control chair when I feel something hit the side of the shuttle.

“ANDI, are you online?”

“Yes, Master RaZ.”

“Are Grandfather and his wife secured inside the other shuttle?”

“Yes, they are safely inside. If you are ready to proceed, I would prefer to get this show on the road, as our humans put it… quickly.
