Chapter 15

Drew

After Sadie checked the cameras, we’re left with more questions than answers. We can clearly see the guy that took Rae, but nobody can identify him. Kai even ran his face through the database at the station. We’ve got nothing but a face. I have been home for almost two hours, trying to relax, but it’s damn near impossible. Just as I’m about to go upstairs, Meela starts growling. “What’s wrong, girl?” I look around the house, but don’t find anything that she’d be growling at. A knock on my door has both dogs running toward it. I look through the peephole and see Sadie. I swing the door open and step outside. “What did you find?” I ask.

She frowns. “Nothing. I just needed to come talk to you about all of this.” I lean back against the door and nod for her to continue. “We may want to have this conversation behind closed doors.” She raises an eyebrow at me.

“Shit. I didn’t think about that.” I open the door and step back inside, waiting for her to follow. “Come on in.” I close the door behind her. “Let me open the back door for these two, make yourself at home, wherever.”

Once the dogs are outside, I sit at the table across from Sadie. “I need to know what your plan is, Drew.” She starts tapping her fingertips on the table nervously. “Is this still just a job to you, or are you actually interested in Rae?”

I lean forward and place my elbows on the table. “It stopped being a job the first time she smiled at me, Sadie.” I lean back in my chair and run my hand through my beard. “I’ve never seen a smile like that. Never met someone that’s been through so much crap and still be so genuinely wonderful.” I stand and walk to the fridge. I could use a beer. I grab one for myself and offer one to Sadie. She nods, so I bring one to her and sit back down. “Neither Malakai or myself wanted this job to land on our desks, but it did, and here we are. I’ll do whatever I have to do to get her back and get you two off the department’s radar. I can guarantee Kai feels the same way.”

She smiles at me, then looks down at her hands. “He is a pretty great guy. The night Hailey and I brought him home, I think she was planning on killing me.” She admits. “She was an abusive piece of shit. Every time I threatened to leave, she told me she would kill Rae. She rented a car to come to the house and kill us both after that big fight, but she must have seen you running after Rae, and decided to kill you instead.” Finally, she looks up at me, and I can see the unshed tears in her eyes.

I stand from the table so fast my chair flips, and a sharp pain spreads across my chest.
