IDENTIFICATION
Materials: Drawing paper, markers, crayons, and pastels.
Procedure: Ask clients to fold their paper in fourths and to draw their answers to each of the following statements in the fourth:
I am…
I am not…
I wish…
I used to be…
Discussion: Discussion focuses on the symbols presented and the client’s reactions to the sketches. Goals include self-awareness and identification of needs, hopes, and goals.
THE STORM
Materials: Drawing paper, markers, crayons, and oil pastels.
Procedure: Have group members close their eyes and imagine they are at a picnic in the forest. “All is well; it is a bright sunny day and you are enjoying the woodsy smell and delicious aroma of hot dogs, hamburgers, and steak on the grill. Your stomach is grumbling a little too loudly so you decide to take a nature walk before lunch. You enjoy observing the exquisite flowers and sniffing in their unique fragrances. The wind picks up a little but you are too entranced by the daisies and wild flowers to take notice. When your cap falls off because of a strong gust your heart skips a beat and you decide to turn back towards the picnic grounds. After a few steps the wind blows madly, the rain begins coming down in torrents, lightening and thunder make their presence known, and you think you might see a funnel in the distance. There is no obvious shelter nearby and your friends are half a mile (0.8 km) away. What do you do?”
Have clients draw what they would do next.
Discussion: Discussion focuses on the clients’ choices and reactions to the emergency. Goals include problem solving and examining each individual’s resourcefulness. Particular attention may be paid to the client who might give up and wait for help, and the client who immediately acts, e.g. quickly finding a low lying area to burrow into until the storm/possible tornado passes.
