Chapter 56

At one, Charlie, Rachael, and Harry arrived at my door. The introductions were awkward, but I was prepared for that and got through them.

“Nice little cabin,” Harry said, smiling.

“Thanks,” I replied.

“Your place looks so festive,” Rachael said. “Even in the daylight you can see your Christmas lights down the street.”

“Okay, ladies and gentleman, we need to get going,” Charlie said, looking at his watch. “Did Rachael tell you that we have a place to tailgate?”

“No, but that sounds like fun,” I said.

We got into Harry’s black Hummer. I had never been in one before and didn’t know what to check out first. I felt like I was going to war in an Army tank. I sat up front with Harry, noticing that he had a large build. Perhaps it was all the heavy, warm Packers garb he was wearing. He had a hearty laugh and seemed to be a man’s man.

“Harry’s got some steak kabobs and sausage links to grill,” Charlie said with excitement. “We won’t go hungry, and others will share their food as well.”

“I’m getting hungry just hearing about it,” I responded.

For the rest of the drive, I mostly listened to the others talk. As we got closer to the stadium, the traffic became thick and the crowds were more intense. It was an exciting atmosphere. As soon as we parked, I could tell there were plenty of intoxicated people. Some faces were painted green, and of course the famous Cheeseheads appeared.

A chilly wind picked up and snow flurries painted the ground white. The fire from our grill helped take away some of the chill, but my toes were freezing. I knew it wouldn’t get any better. Food and drink appeared and took my mind off of the cold. I wondered if my taste buds were frozen. I could tell that Rachael was watching my reactions, and I did not want to disappoint her. Eating outdoors did increase my appetite, so I did my best to sample everything.

“How are you doing, hon?” Harry asked as he put his arm around me.

“Fine, fine,” I said, determined to be a good sport.

Just before the game started, Harry knew exactly where we needed to go since he had season tickets. When we arrived at our row in the stadium, I couldn’t even determine which seats were ours. I guessed that with season tickets, I’d expected to see something more comfortable. Harry told us the numbers of our seats, and we made our way through the unruly crowd. Earlier in the day, Charlie had bragged about the view we would have from our seats, but once there, I didn’t see what made them special. I just wanted to sit and be warm, but that didn’t happen either. It seemed that people mostly stood during the game.

The fans were bundled up like we were, so our four seats on the concrete bench were hard to find. In unison, we all sat down, shoulder to shoulder. Well, that part was cozy, which I didn’t object to.
