Four hours later, as Finley was about to get off her shift, Gabriel came running up to her. âIâve got something!â
âLetâs go,â Finley said, leading the way to Kaiâs room.
They administered the medication that Gabriel had formulated and watched it drip into Kaiâs IV.
âSo what was it, do you think?â Finley asked, feeling a bit stricken.
âThere was some seriously rare-ass strain of ginger in whatever they used to marinate the stuffâeither that or it was left over from what theyâd had in it before.â
âJesusâ¦â Finley breathed.
âHer chart doesnât say anything about her being allergic to ginger, Doc Taylor. You couldnât have known even if youâd known there was ginger in itâ¦â
Finley nodded, but didnât look convinced.
Finley spent the next six hours pacing in Kaiâs room, waiting for things to change. Fortunately, the fever started breaking immediately, and slowly but surely Kaiâs vitals improved. It was three oâclock in the morning when Kai opened her eyes. Finley strode over to Kaiâs bedside immediately, checking her pulse and looking her over.
âKai? Kai, are you with me?â she said, putting her hands on either side of Kaiâs face and staring into her eyes.
Kai blinked slowly a couple of times, looking fairly dazed.
âHey, handsome, are you sure?â Finley asked, biting her lip.
âFlirt,â Kai muttered softly.
âThere she isâ¦â Finley said, feeling almost dizzy with relief.
âWhat the hell happened? I feel like I got hit by a bus againâ¦â
âApparently there was some rare strain of ginger in that marinade they used for your chickenâyou had a reaction to it.â
Kai laid her head back against the pillows. âAnd sheâs already trying to kill meâ¦â she said softly, grinning.
Finley bit her lip. Kai glanced up and saw the devastated look on her face.
âDoc, Iâm just kidding,â she said, reaching out to touch Finleyâs hand. âIâm not even allergic to gingerâitâs not your fault.â
Finley nodded, knowing she needed to get over this feeling of guilt.
âHey,â Kai said, taking Finleyâs hand in hers and squeezing it gently.
âOkay,â Finley said. âIâm okay.â
âGood.â
