Remember: these things don’t define your gender identity. They are only ways that you can choose how to express your gender. If you are a man, but you find you prefer traditionally feminine looks, that doesn’t stop you from being a man.

You might hear people talking about ‘passing’. This means when trans people ‘pass’ as their gender rather than their assigned gender – for example, if a trans man ‘passes’, it means people automatically assume he is a man, and do not question his gender.

For some trans people, passing is incredibly important. You might find that passing as your true gender helps with your dysphoria.

However, not every trans person is able to ‘pass’ as their gender as easily as others. This may lead to people misgendering you, which might be upsetting or cause you pain. It’s important to remember that other people’s opinions do not impact on who you are.

As well as adapting how you dress, there are other things you can do to express your gender in a way that fits your gender identity, and to help towards ‘passing’ as best you can, if that helps you.
