Mack rushed to her next class after the bell shocked her and Beth from their makeout session. She had slipped into her seat just in time to avoid a reprimand for being late, chest heaving. She looked over at Lila who looked confused as to why she was panting like she had just run a marathon.

“Beth,” Mack whispered, wiggling her eyebrows at Lila.

A cloud seemed to pass over her friend’s face and she quickly turned back to the board. Mack looked at her for a moment before the lesson began.

After class, she and Lila walked to their lockers together. Lila didn’t ask anything about Beth and Mack didn’t offer up any kind of information. It seemed unusual since Lila always wanted to know everything that was going on, but Mack was too distracted to think too much about it.

“Hey,” Lila began as they got their books for the next class. “I have a bunch of daytime judge shows recorded at home. Want to come over and watch with me tomorrow?”

“I can’t,” Mack said with an apologetic smile that soon transformed into a smug one. “I’m hanging out with Beth all day.”

“What do you even do with Beth? Besides the obvious.”

“I think you’d like Beth a lot if you hung out with her,” Mack said. “She’s funny and likes a lot of the same shows we do. Like Top Model and that show about antiques—”

“What about the next day?”

Mack sucked air through her teeth and shook her head. “I’m with Meghan that day.”

Lila crossed her arms and frowned. “Is there any day you can hang out with me?”

“I can’t. I’m hanging out with Beth and Meghan all weekend. Like…all weekend,” Mack said, unable to help the proud smile that lit up her features. “But maybe next weekend!” Lila barked out a short laugh as Mack continued. “Actually, I need your help getting Daphne,” she said as they started toward gym class. “She’s the next cheerleader on my list, and I think I have a plan.”

“A plan?”

Mack gave her a serious look. “Yes. And it involves something we’ve never done before unless forced to.”

“Running?”

“Worse. We have to be on separate teams in P.E.”

“Well, shit,” Lila said as they stepped up to their gym lockers. They were tucked into a corner away from everyone else getting changed for class. It was a strategy that Mack developed in eighth grade so they wouldn’t have to undress in front of other people. Mack took off her shoes first before slipping her shirt off without much thought. Some hair fell over her face as her shirt came off and she tried to blow it out of her face.

“I need you to throw a dodgeball at Daphne and I’ll save her,” Mack said, quickly running a hand through her hair to get it out of her eyes. “She’s such a drama queen in P.E.”

Lila wasn’t answering. Mack looked over at her to see her staring, face flushed, eyes wide and fixated on Mack’s torso. Mack frowned and she tried to get her attention.
