To end the night, we played a few hands of blackjack. She told me about the things her family did on Christmas and the food they cooked as part of their traditions. We reminisced about our childhoods and things we shared in common. It was a nice afternoon, and I hated to leave her alone on Christmas Eve, but it was important that I saw my kids.

“That’s game. You beat me fair and square. You’re so good, Ms. G.”

“You aren’t leavin’ already, are you? You just got here.”

“Believe it or not, I’ve been here for six hours. Besides, my kids are expecting me. It’s Christmas Eve. But don’t you worry. I saved you leftovers in the fridge. Hope you eat them,” I said with a wink.

Her lips pressed together in a pout—a sign she wouldn’t touch another bite.

“I’ll see you tomorrow at our regular time. I hate to go, but my family’s waiting for me.”

“Don’t worry, kid. You’ve given me a better Christmas than you know. Now, go be with your children. That’s what’s most important. Never forget that.”

“I won’t.”

I grabbed my new blanket and headed for the car. Because I’d stashed money away, I was able to buy the kids a few extra presents for under the tree. It was the least I could do for the harm I’d put them through.
