The condition in which nothing step is taken is called the Rest Frame. The period you calculate in the rest frame between clicks is given by (just a basic Distance / Speed calculation)
When you are moving along at a constant speed, v, the situation will be
So the time between clicks will be
We will measure the distance D by using the Pythagoras law for right-handed triangles. The height of the triangle will be L, and however fast the clock has traveled in one click the range across the bottom will be v\Delta t' (speed period is distance)
We can substitute this expression for D into Equation 2, and then rearrange for \Delta t', which gives
If we now replace L/c with \Delta t (from Equation 1), we get the Equation for Time Dilation
This calculation shows you how distinct the running clock (\Delta t') is from a clock in the rest frame (\Delta t).
For much of the values of v, we are used to the v^2/c^2 ratio being small in real life, and the Equation 3 denominator is typically and close to 1 that we can't sense the discrepancy and thus we consider that \Delta t'=\Delta t. For instance, two people synchronize watches, and then one flies at 120 mph. When the stationary individual reports a 30-second time then the running party reports a 29.9999999999952 seconds time. This disparity is much too slight to calculate, except for the latest equipment, and we don't even note the consequences of relativity at low speeds when opposed to the speed of light.
That Shrinking Feeling
As already mentioned, The Speed of Light is still the same, but as we have just figured out, if you are going quickly enough, time will slow down. Speed is measured as traveled distance separated by time, but if time shifts, then distance must be needed to maintain the speed of light steady.
When time gets bigger by a fixed factor, then distance will get narrower by the same factor to keep the speed of light for a traveling observer unchanged. And our Length Contraction Equation is
The bit in the square root occurs in relativity all over the place and it's generally abbreviated as
After the physicist Hendrik Lorentz (the same Lorentz who came up with the Lorentz force), whose equations and transformations are used in relativity, this is called the Lorentz component.
Essentially this is the theory of gravity. The fundamental principle is that instead of being an intangible power drawing points to each other, gravity becomes a curving or physical warping. The more large an entity, the more it distorts the surrounding space.
