It is possible to encode 0 to lowest energy state of ion and 1 into higher energy state. The computation can then be done by use of light in order to manipulate the states of the ions. In an experiment done at University of Innsbruck, Austria, this has successfully been done for up to 14 ions. In the next step, the technology will be scaled up to some bigger number of trapped ions.

There are several other ways to building a quantum computer. Rather than using the trapped ions, one can choose to use particles or electrons of light photons. It is possible to use complicated objects such as electric current in a superconductor. The good with all these physical systems such as atoms and the electric current in a semiconductor exhibit a behavior that is in line to same physical laws. They are all capable of performing quantum computation. However, it will be difficult for us to isolate the quantum systems from the environment and be able to operate them with a high level of precision. This is very hard and a fundamental task and it will be very useful for us to control quantum systems.
