Putin was shown sitting at a desk at one side, interrogating his top officials, ranged before him in a semi-circle, twenty yards away. One by one, they assured him of their support, like frightened boyars pledging allegiance. It was the mise-en-scène of a monarch, a display of raw power, designed to show that the leadership was united but in reality making clear that all the decisions were taken by one man. The liberal newspaper Novaya Gazeta reported afterwards that the most powerful men in Russia had been shown like zombies, with gloomy, tense faces … afraid to look at each at each other, paralysed with fear.1
