Raven Haverington was his mate.

Risyn still couldn’t believe it.

They’d dream-shared, yes, but to have that link confirmed and verified on a genetic level was another thing entirely. Unfortunately, as was figuring out how the draanth to court a human female. He had limited experience with females, and courting one’s mate was a different matter from wooing bored widows looking to fill their beds for an afternoon. And that was before he figured in the differences between their two cultures were stark and unforgiving.

Gritting his teeth, he strode down the corridor toward her room. It had taken him some hours of research on the human data feeds to work out how human females liked to be courted. Fortunately, some elements of courtship seemed to be the same for human females as they had been for Latharian females all those years ago.

Flowers. For human females the blooms were different, but the thought was the same. With a little more research, he’d settled on red roses and arranged a ritual meal in his quarters for tonight. His real quarters, back up on the Devan’kra, not the ones the humans had assigned to him here.

When he claimed his mate for the first time, he wanted it to be in his home, or at least the home he’d known in the years since becoming commander of the B’Kaar. He wanted to court her in familiar surroundings, not in impersonal guest quarters that countless others had slept in.

Besides, she would need to get used to his culture sooner rather than later. On their mating, she would become a war commander’s lady, and he could be recalled from Earth at a moment’s notice. So they might as well get started on what was expected of her immediately.

To his surprise, President Murphy turned the corner ahead of him. The human gave him a polite nod as they passed each other in the corridor. Risyn didn’t speak. Only personal quarters were in this section, which meant the human had to be returning from an assignation of his own. It wasn’t any of Risyn’s business to pry further.

Reaching Raven’s door, he took a moment and pulled his uniform more neatly into place. He’d opted not to don his kasivar, the armored suit already in place on the shuttle that would take them up to the station. Tonight he wanted to be more… approachable. An armored warsuit wouldn’t give that effect.

For a moment he stood there rather than knocking. He blew out a breath and shoved a hand through his hair. He felt a little odd, out of sorts, his heart going like he’d had too much coffee. He’d overdone it with the human beverage when he’d first arrived. He hadn’t been able to believe such a backward planet could have developed something so amazing. Taking a deep breath, he reached up and knocked sharply on the door. It opened almost immediately and he found his breath stolen.

Raven stood before him, but this was Raven as he’d never seen her before.
