But one afterschool session was uncommonly TV-free.

As I turned the front door handle I felt strange vibrations pulsing through the brass into my palm. I entered cautiously and paused in the middle of the hall, trying to figure out the deep, deep sounds which were coming from Ted’s bedroom. Mom’s trinkets rattled on the shelf below the mirror and I looked at my reflection in the quivering glass. My hair was ravaged by repeated gonzo Sun-In applications: nothing new there, but my lips were doing something I hadn’t seen them do before – a kind of pouty frown. The dog looked at me suspiciously as my battered Head backpack slid off my shoulders and my outsized adolescent feet began to tap out a rhythm on the carpet.

‘What is it?, I whispered to the hound, mind blown. It was the first time I’d ever heard funk.
