NINA

“Nina, why don’t you help me get settled in, and then we can give me a tour of this beautiful place? I’d love to see where you work. And where is my favorite little puppy in the world?”

“He’s upstairs, eager for you to see him.” I grab his rolling suitcase while he grabs a duffel bag. “We can stop and pick him up right after we drop off your things.”

We arrive at his room, one of my favorites of all the ones we’ve designed. It’s a suite based on Tuareg art of North Africa, with Berber carpets from Morocco, paintings of Bedouin markets, and silver lamps and teak chests from Tunisia.

My father drops his duffel bag upon entering and admires it all.

“You did this?” he asks, dumbfounded.

“Just a little something I was working on the last few weeks. Do you like it?” I try to sound humble, but I’m incredibly proud of it.

“Honey, I love it. It’s fantastic! I’m so proud of you.”

Dad is always good about complimenting me, and I’ll never get tired of hearing it. I need to write Madame Dubois a thank you card for all this design work keeping the conversation away from Xavier.

“Give me a minute to change, and then we’ll take a walk and get dinner at the restaurant? Unless it’s going to be expensive.”

I shake my head. “Dad, I eat for free, and you’re with me. You don’t have to worry about a thing.”

At the word ‘free,’ he appears even more excited than before and rushes to the bathroom to change. He has more money than he knows what to do with, but my dad has never met a discount he didn’t like or one he didn’t want to haggle over further.

He returns dressed in a crisp black suit and tie.

“How do I look?” he asks as he presents himself with a wave of his hands.

“Like you’re trying to impress me.”

“Pride in my appearance as a show of pride in my daughter. I don’t want your dad showing up looking like he just got done at the processing plant.”

He squeezes me in a full-forced dad hug, kissing my forehead. He lets me go and puts me at arm’s length so he can talk to me eye-to-eye.

“Before we go, let’s talk about the elephant in the room,” he says.

My eyes dart to the statuette in the corner, and I gesture.

“Very funny.” And to his credit, he does chuckle to himself. “But I’m being serious. Is Xavier being around going to bother you?”

“Oh. I barely even thought about him. It should be easy enough to stay away, I think.” I don’t even sound convinced of this.

“Are you sure? I don’t have to remind you of what he did all those years ago.”

“No, it’s fine. It was so long ago that it doesn’t bother me at all anymore. I just want to enjoy our time together while you’re here.”

He nods and kisses the top of my head again.

“I couldn’t agree more. Let the tour begin! If
