COMPASSION AND PARENT INTERVENTIONS

The significance of compassion for parenting interventions has also gained attention from interventionists working to support children’s resilience in community settings. In the following, three parent interventions are described that highlight the role of caregivers’ compassion in promoting children’s emotional stability and mental health.

Compassion-Focused Therapy

Paul Gilbert14 developed a therapeutic intervention for caregivers based on his model of compassion to promote more sensitive and responsive reactions to children’s stress. The therapeutic strategies of CFT address core sensitivities within the emotion regulation systems related to caregiving. Each of three parent sensitivities, termed separation sensitivity, self-esteem sensitivity, and safety sensitivity, limits responsive and reliable caregiving. More specifically, a separation sensitivity is defined as a parent’s heightened need to keep his or her children close; a self-esteem sensitivity reflects an intensified reaction to criticism; and a safety sensitivity refers to an inability to handle distress. Core parental sensitivities reflect imbalances in the emotion regulation system that are believed to emerge from parental personal attachment histories. CFT provides therapeutic strategies of self-compassion such that the sensitivities of closeness, criticism, and distress can be better managed. Self-compassion practices reduce parental reactivity and allow for increased reflection in parent-child interactions. In CFT, increasing both self-compassion and compassion for children is central to the promotion of more sensitive and responsive caregiving.
